The etymology of concepts has always interested me, especially when a word is being coined with social purposes.

YAOUNDE (Reuters) – Farmgate cocoa prices in Cameroon’s main growing regions have fallen by as much as 6 percent since April as heavy rains have hampered drying of beans and further damaged unpaved roads needed to transport the beans to port, farmers said on Tuesday.

Prices fell to between 925 and 940 CFA francs per kg in Bafia, the main growing hub in the Centre region, from about 960 to 975 CFA francs in April. In Mamfe in the South West region, prices fell to between 875 and 900 CFA francs per kg from 960 CFA francs.

“It is not easy for farmers to sun their beans as it is raining heavily almost everyday,” said Dickson Tambe, head a local farmers’ cooperative in Mamfe.

“Farmers can neither take their few beans to marketing centres nor can buyers come in from Kumba and Douala (the main commercial centres),” Tambe added, reffering to the deteriorating state of the roads.

Attacks by caterpillars and black pod disease earlier in the year has delayed the start of the mid-crop harvest in the Centre and South regions and this has also hurt prices, said Essien Efa, who farms in Ebolowa.

“The mid-crop harvest has started very slowly and from all indications this may also affect this season’s output,” Efa said.

Cocoa output in the world’s fifth grower hit a record of 240,000 tonnes in 2010/11 and the Cocoa Development Authority (SODECAO) projected the figure would rise to 250,000 tonnes this year. But so far exports have been lagging.

The cocoa season in the Central African country, the world’s fifth grower, runs from August 1 to July 31 with the main crop harvest from October to January/February and the mid-crop harvest from May to July.

We are what we eat!

 
It is an oft overlooked fact, but in today's world it can be so easy to forget about the importance of eating well.

Our generation has inherited a highly disfunctional food system, and along with it, poor diet and a global epidemic of diet-related diseases which has led to 43 million children under the age of 5 being overweight, while millions of other around the world go hungry.  There is more than enough food to feed our entire global population, but inequal distrobution in our food systems results in a great divide between those who have enough to eat and those who do not.

We have the opportunity to change this system; creating sustained change is not easy, we need a revolution in the way we think about food in order to empower individuals to understand how food contributes to global challenges like obesity, povery, sustainability and human rights.

Starting with Education to better understand all of the ways food has an impact on us and our world is an important first step towards unleashing the change we wish to see.
